What Is the CRS Score?
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the points-based system used by Canada's Express Entry to rank candidates in the pool. Your CRS score determines whether you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
The maximum possible CRS score is 1,200 points. Regular draws invite candidates with the highest scores.

How Express Entry Draws Work
Regular Draws
- IRCC typically holds draws every 2 weeks
- A CRS cutoff score is set for each draw
- All candidates at or above the cutoff receive an ITA
- The number of ITAs per draw varies (typically 1,000–5,000+)
Types of Draws
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| General | Open to all programs (FSW, CEC, FST) |
| Program-specific | Only one program (e.g., CEC only) |
| Category-based | Targeting specific skills or French proficiency |
| PNP | For provincially nominated candidates |
Recent Draw History (2024-2025)
| Draw Type | Typical CRS Cutoff | Typical # of ITAs |
|---|---|---|
| General | 480–530 | 1,000–5,000 |
| Category (Healthcare) | 420–470 | 500–3,000 |
| Category (French) | 300–410 | 500–2,500 |
| Category (STEM) | 430–480 | 500–2,000 |
| PNP | 680–780 | 500–1,000 |
How to Calculate Your CRS Score
You can estimate your CRS score using the IRCC CRS calculator:
- Go to the IRCC CRS tool
- Enter your personal information
- Enter your spouse/partner info (if applicable)
- Get your estimated score
Strategies to Improve Your CRS Score
| Strategy | Potential CRS Gain |
|---|---|
| Improve language scores (e.g., CLB 7 → CLB 9) | +40 to +80 |
| Learn French (bilingual bonus) | +25 to +50 |
| Get a Provincial Nomination | +600 (guaranteed ITA) |
| Get a valid job offer | +50 or +200 |
| Gain Canadian work experience | +35 to +80 |
| Complete Canadian education | +15 to +30 |
| Get a higher degree | Variable |
Tie-Breaking Rules
If multiple candidates have the same CRS score at the cutoff:
- The candidate who submitted their profile earlier gets priority
- This means submitting your profile as early as possible is important
Tips
- Focus on language first — it's the fastest way to boost your CRS
- French is a secret weapon — bilingual bonus + French-language draws with low cutoffs
- PNP is the ultimate booster — +600 points virtually guarantees an ITA
- Keep tracking draws — cutoffs change frequently based on immigration levels
- Don't wait to improve — enter the pool now and update your profile later
- Tie-breaking favors early profiles — submit as soon as you're eligible
