How It Works

  1. Form a sponsoring group — SAH, Group of Five, or Community Sponsor
  2. Identify a refugee — through UNHCR, personal connections, or referral
  3. Submit application — to IRCC with Settlement Plan and financial commitment
  4. IRCC processing — reviews sponsor and refugee eligibility
  5. Visa issued — refugee travels to Canada
  6. Settlement — 12 months of sponsor-provided support

Settlement Plan

Sponsors must submit a Settlement Plan detailing:

Tips

  1. SAHs are the most common route — they have experience and streamlined processes
  2. Groups of Five must prove income — minimum income requirements apply
  3. Budget generously — unexpected costs always arise
  4. Emotional support matters most — financial support is important, but personal connection is transformative
  5. Connect with settlement agencies — they can complement your support
  6. Start language training immediately — it's the key to independence
